What did artists have to contribute to the abolition movement, and what forms of creative expression did enslaved people in the US make? We’ll turn our attention to Edmonia Lewis’s context and her contemporaries to understand just how radical and liberatory artwork could be at the end of the 19th century.

Art! with Dr. Ike, Ph.D. is coming to Tinworks! The fourth season of this public lecture series will take place once a month over the summer and fall to accompany Chisel & Razor Acts I and II.

The first episode will begin in the present, with each episode taking us backwards in time to Edmonia Lewis and her contemporaries. We’ll explore how art engages community, memory, Civil Rights, and Abolition by looking at Black artists in US art history.

This event is free and open to the public, registration is not required. Attendees are encouraged to dress for changing weather conditions

Dr. Ike, Ph.D. is an art historian specializing in the intersection of art, environment, and politics. He has held research fellowships at the Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Chicago, University of Pittsburgh, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and has twice been a finalist (but rejected both times) from postdocs at Harvard.
